Thankful For Mothers & Waterproof Mascara

(above) My mother Caroline enjoying one of her favorite hobbies.

When I look at old photos of my mother I often wonder if she ever judged herself as harshly as some women do. To me my mother was my mother. I never noticed her weight or her nose or wrinkles because I only saw her heart. I never heard my mother ever state anything about not accepting her physical attributes. Only once in her last years she stated to me about how she realized some hair grew abruptly without her knowledge. She told me about some funny waxing adventure with her and another of my sister's. She asked me if I knew of a solution. Being always a tom-boy I can tell you I did not then nor do I today.

I always wished more for my mother. When I would visit she would read me a new poem she wrote and regale tales of her cats but in my early twenties I pitied her. "She should want more from life than being cooped up all day in her house in solitude awaiting a visitor" I'd often think to myself.

Now in my thirties I sit at home in my solitude focusing on a hobby or blog soaking in the peace. It's moments like this I long for . Days with nothing more on the agenda then then to make tea and breathe the cool spring air.

Even with her absence I still learn from her. It's hard sometimes to appreciate just existing and relishing the days when we don't have an off-set in our thoughts. My mother was at times the definition of Zen. She taught me there are more important things than looks and material things do not bring you peace of mind. She was happy just being. As I find myself making peace & tying ends I still try to imbue her ability to appreciate every small thing. I know as I get older I will understand even more lessons.

When I would visit she would always brag about how intelligent, fearless, tender-hearted and independent I was. She was always fascinated that I was learning Spanish and got a scholarship for college. Lastly,  before I left, she would tell me how pretty I was because between the two of us we knew other things were more important. The of course she'd give me a big hug and tell me how much she loved me.

I Know How Super-Villians Are Formed or How I Learned to Distiguish Disgust From Hate

I had stopped myself from discussing this socially several times because I was worried about how my message would be taken. But here's the thing: if my thoughts offend you don't read them. If you think poor of me don't be my friend. Believe that I am crazy or an evil person. For the first time in my life I honestly do not care what anyone thinks of me. I will not pretend to care for people who do not deserve my respect. I will not hold my tongue to save someone else.  I have to purge this because I don't think I'm going to feel better until I get it out even if it cannot be voiced directly.

I think it's sick to call yourself a person's friend when all you did was give him drugs and take advantage of him. I asked you for help with Caleb's mental illness. I told you the pain pills made him abusive towards me and you shrugged it off and still kept giving them to him. I should've reported you to the police then.

I asked you to encourage him to go to the mental hospital as his aggression was unusual and you did not help. You advised me to "stop trying to control him" and I watched his slow demise.

I think it's disgusting that instead of actually being my ally and possibly a constructive force in your friend's life you exacerbated his hate & enabled unhealthy life choices. You promote yourself as one of his best friends but you only contacted him when you needed a favor.

He busted out all 10 of my windows because he was having a really fucking bad episode. I asked the police to take him to the mental hospital for evaluation. They chose to take him to jail. Do you understand that now? You shrugged it off as though it was an everyday occurrence. You accused me of ruining his life. You told me "I hope you die alone". I wanted for so long to make you understand the terror that exists when someone is out of their head enough to swing a table at you . I wanted to pay a 200 pound man to come over, rip an awning post down, swing it at YOUR face and damage your entire house so you might understand. But you weren't understanding. You blamed me for Caleb's own actions. It's convenient to claim he was capable enough make his own decisions until he's in jail ...then you switched it to "he was crazy and needed help".

What you did is exacerbate his hate towards one of his biggest supporters. What you did was convince him to separate himself even further from the one woman who had been able to love him through major episodes, a woman who knew how insane he was and loved his flaws and all. The woman who convinced him he could do anything he put his mind to that his mental illness was not an excuse to not aspire to what he wanted. A woman who encouraged him and bought him thousands of dollars of studio equipment to achieve his dream. He had a studio. He was doing what he loved & he was happy.

You accused me of taking advantage of a mentally ill person. Do you know what actually happens during an episode? Do you  know how absolutely out of control and out of touch with reality a person can get? No, you don't. You had the luxury of being a fair-weather person in his life. You, like many,  were sheltered from the darkness. The love a person has turns to hate . The balance gets shifted the complete opposite way . Once, while we were separated we agreed to go on a picnic and he was so uncoordinated and jerky that I asked him if he was feeling okay. He confided in me that he had stopped his Abilify because he lost it. He was without his antipsychotic med for 5 days. I turned the car around immediately and told him we were finding the medication or paying cash for it. He didn't lose it he just didn't want to take it. I had to force him to take the med.
When you love someone with mental illness and they are having an episode you have to take care of them when they cannot.  They often do not like it. You still have to do what is best for the mentally ill person.

Caleb admitted to everyone that he didn't know what happened after the first big episode we encountered . He asked everyone to listen to me when I said he wasn't acting right . He admitted to everyone that I could see the signs quickly . No one listened .

Instead you  convinced him if he got a restraining order on me he would get off probation. Did it work? Did you advise him correctly?

You told me I was responsible for ruining his life. I want to thank you personally for where we are today.  While I was with Caleb he was going to SAE, well-fed and never wanting anything. Bills were paid. Medications were taken. He took vacations. He had a roof over his head and his life was very stable. I learned about medications and paid close attention to side effects and his mood changes because I'd had some past experience dealing with mentally ill people. He had a normal life. The only thing I put my foot down on was drug usage and trust me I know what his life was on drugs. I know what his emotions, hallucinations and imbalanced brain chemistry was on drugs. I saw those when he wasn't. I was privy to both the power of and ugliness of an unbalanced mind. It was  a stark contrast. I never forced or made Caleb do anything. He obviously had free will but he chose a life with me because he wanted that life with me.

Did I ruin his life? Nope. Your fool-proof legal advice kept me so far away that I had no choice but to remove myself from his life and accept that my hands were clean of anything to happen the next year. I'm no saint. I'm no savior. You were right. I would've reached out. I would've made an effort. Even if we weren't together I'd make sure he was taking his meds.  You have no idea how many times I had to say to that man "If you aren't feeling well call you doctor" or "Let's make a therapy appointment. I don't think you will ever endure the selflessness involved nor are you capable of such. It wasn't work. I loved him. Not many could be both a caretaker and a partner. I did both because I loved him.
But no matter how I judge you only you have to deal with your own subconscious, decisions and your own higher power. It is no concern to me how you continue to live your miserable life. You wanted all of his studio gear, music and belongings and you got them. You swore you'd keep him out of my life and you got your wish. But know this the really important things are immaterial and you have absolutely zero control over this. The responsibility is on your head if you do not do right by him. Your opinion of me means literally nothing. Anyone who really knew the relationship knows the truth.  All I know is that if I could trade his soul for yours and put you in his place I would in a heartbeat without a second thought. And I don't have any remorse or regrets in stating that. Yes it is an incredibly mean thing to say and  it's how I feel.

I'm also kind of disgusted by another individual who really didn't have any involvement in Caleb's life but since his passing has alluded to so much more. Go ahead and get all of this attention. You seem to need to feed on this unfortunate event and gain as much spotlight as you can.  You hung out with Caleb like twice in 15 years. It is tacky to say a ghost is watching you change. If this was the depth of your relationship then you are fake, insincere and tacky. I'm sorry if none of your friends will tell you this but I'm not the one to hold my tongue. You are tacky. I don't care what you did to your brain or why you need to feel the attention you are milking a situation. You were not important to him. He was not important to you. You were not going to take care of him. You don't even understand the reality of what that meant. It is easy to say we made promises that never had to be delivered. Its easy to claim how things would've been since the opportunity will never arise and you obviously didn't want to make the effort when there was time. Real love doesn't pause. It doesn't question. It doesn't make future plans when the time is right. It just happens.

You are being disrespectful for anyone who really knew him.

Yes, I realize I am being very judgmental.
I don't care if these individuals saved your mom from a burning building... who was swaddling a baby ...who was holding 5 kittens ...to me they are worthless. I literally do not care.

I know this isn't very Buddhist. I am human.
I will definitely forget (you exist). I may forgive in time...but today is not that day.

Damn, I feel pretty cleansed.

***Update James pawned all of Caleb's music and recording equipment because that is the type of selfish piece of shit he was. He was the the one always taking advantage of Caleb. He'd bribe him with pain pills and then not pay him for his recording work on his album. He told me that he hit his wife.
What a trashy, washed up piece of mierda.

Silence is Golden.

“When you understand that what you're telling is just a story. It isn't happening anymore. When you realize the story you're telling is just words, when you can just crumble up and throw your past in the trashcan, then we'll figure out who you're going to be.”
― Chuck Palahniuk

When my fiancĂ© of 3 & a-half years left in January, I was a broken person.
Knowing his past behaviors during manic episodes, I thought I had mentally prepared myself for this. I didn't expect, extrapolate, or calculate that healing has its own timeline, & unfortunately these things take time.

Even so, I was determined to quickly reach a point of acceptance and growth. I was determined to no longer settle for my happiness. I was oblivious, or maybe in denial, to the fact that I needed to focus on myself. I needed more time to nurture the hurt parts of my soul...But I had always been an impatient person.

I was excited, albeit hesitant, to venture out into the dating scene.  I signed up for a few dating sites to see if I could sort out someone truly special among the cornucopia of weeds, weirdos, and freaks. I had an overwhelming response to my ad. To this day, I am still scratching my head as to why one member chose a close-up picture of his one extremely red eye as his profile photo. No one particularly stuck out until I came across an image of a familiar face.

Jonathan B. McElroy aka JBMCLRY. I'd worked with Jonathan for several years at a previous job.  He is probably a wallflower to most people, just another average, slightly overweight hipster with a beard. He seemed like your average Joe, but to me, I was attracted to the authority in his voice, his confidence & weird sense of humor. When I saw his picture on OKCupid I thought to myself, "There is no way he and his girlfriend broke up. They were SO happy." After fact-checking Facebook to assure myself, I wasn't preemptively getting involved in some complicated drama-I-didn't-need-in-my-life situation, I clicked the "like" button, probably blushed & most definitely giggled like a schoolgirl.
The heart I thought would never thump again was akin to Jim Henson's Muppet Animal on a drum set.
The anticipation just felt so good.

Many of Jonathan's first dates were nothing less than magical. My birthday was like the scene from "16 Candles". He held my hand as we walked through Moss Wright Park. He looked lovingly into my eyes as we discussed having children and how desperately he wanted to be a father. He revealed how much he feared never having the opportunity to start a family of his own. His eyes actually twinkled when he stared into my eyes. We walked around the Opryland Hotel Garden while he told me about his time as a marine and the passing of his father. It seemed as though I'd found someone with so many common interests and life goals who had suffered as much as I had and deserved so much more. It was so perfect in the beginning that only 3 weeks into it I remember joking with my roommate that he " was so perfect, there must be something terribly wrong with him". We laughed, but in hindsight, I know my intuition was trying to tell me something that the oxytocin flowing through my neural pathways refused to acknowledge.

As perfect as things seemed, there were huge signs I should've noticed. People were waving red flags telling me to avoid this disaster but I couldn't see the reality through the perfect, content, romance-filled life I'd been promised.  Here's a few things that occurred after a month of dating that should've sent me running for the hills:

  • He wanted to move in after 3 weeks of dating.
  • He demanded exclusivity & that we rush into a marriage-type situation.
  • He threw a tantrum when I told him I was going to a male friend's party.
  • He was consistently late for any plans.
  • Easter weekend we were supposed to meet at noon. At 1:30 I contacted him asking where he was. ( I now know he was on a date.) He threw a tantrum & refused to keep Easter plans. He later tried to make me feel bad for him because he "was alone on Easter".
  • He would take everything out of context and take offense to every little thing.
  • He would compare me positively to his ex.
He had me convinced that his poor behavior was due to damage caused by his previous relationship & breakup & PTSD from serving in the military for 4 months in 1997; however, I decided I needed to break it off with him. I was exhausted by his moodiness & unreliability. There was another man who wanted to court me, and he seemed like a more stable option. Since I try to be an upfront & honest person & I refuse to string anyone along I informed him of the reasons I wanted to break things off. Suddenly, his behavior changed. His personality briefly switched back to the funny, vulnerable, attentive man I was initially attracted to. Things were good. I chalked the initial poor behavior to dating jitters and proceeded to fall for this man. He said he loved me in Gaelic. Unfortunately that's when the extremely abusive behavior reared it's ugly head but by this time I had been gradually groomed for what follwed the next few months.
  • (April) He began getting upset for absolutely no logical reason and blaming me for his anger.
  • He told me I didn't know how to treat a man and accused me of trying to control him.
  • He began to compare me negatively to his ex and several other women.
  • He demanded I paint my nails. He critiqued everything I wore. He told me to start parting my hair to the other side.
  • He tripped me because I had to get up to use the restroom.
  • He would have sex with me when I was asleep.
  • (May) He pushed me & told me to get out of his apartment one evening after we had gone to sleep. While I was putting on my shirt he ripped it out of my hands & tore it to shreds. He pushed me against the wall and then kissed me and begged me not to leave him. His excuse was PTSD. He left several scratches and bruises on my arms.
  • (May) He backed into my car purposefully and then reprimanded me for getting upset.
  • He ripped my shirt and tried to force me to answer the door dressed inappropriately when the food delivery guy got there.
  • He started calling me names during his tantrums. After the first time I was called a b*tch I politely explained to him that I would not accept that behavior. After the 5th time, I called him a b*tch back & he ignored me for 3 days because "it means something worse for men".
  • (June) He threw his dog across the apartment because it peed on the floor.
  • (June) He accused me of cheating on him & demanded I take pictures around the house to prove no one was home with me.
  • (July 4th) He grabbed my arm, bruised me, and pushed me again. When I refused to apologize for my behavior, he punched himself in his side and threatened to call the police on me.
  • He threw his dog into the counter this time breaking it's nail. It bled on the bed and the wall. D.B. refused to clean it up and expected me to sleep in/on/around it.
  • (July) He informed me that he broke a wood-burned elephant I gave him into pieces to clean up dog shit with. When I started to cry he scolded me for getting upset.
  • (July) A bug was stinging my arm and I flicked it off. He spit in my face because I "flicked it at him in anger".
  • (July) We were playing a video game, and I leveled up & picked up better gear before him, so he acted insulted, threw a tantrum & kicked me out.
  • (July 24th) He told me I was the only one who understood him. Then kicked me out because I had to get out of bed to use the bathroom. He had made me lie in the bed for almost 18 hours at this point.
  • (July 28th) I found another woman walking his dog at his apartment. She had slept over. I confronted both & ended that terrible relationship once and for all.
I have forgiven myself for letting this warped person get inside my head. I have forgiven myself for allowing this individual to treat me way less than I deserved. I know it seems obvious that this situation was severely toxic, but relationships like these do not start out like this. I'm going to chalk this up as another lesson in life. I now completely understand the phrase "a wolf in sheep's clothing". Even after experiencing it it's still hard to believe that someone I'd known for years who seemed like your average nice man was so toxic underneath it all. I've even forgiven his behavior and confronted him about my mistreatment. I am at peace. I am thankful that I am brimming with empathy and sympathy, and I will continue to foster healthy relationships throughout my life. It must be absolutely exhausting to try to control a person. This is a trait I will never feel compelled or desire to seek nor will I ever understand the emptiness that must reside inside such a toxic individual.

God, I feel so terrible for his current wife. I keep tabs on him, so I can verify that he is far the hell away from me. I saw a post on Facebook in a rock identification group about how years ago, he tried to convince her that a black rock was blue. That was the beginning of your grooming, girl. One of his first micro mindfucks was him arguing that the sky 'was green' and how 'everyone knows it's green.'
Good god, what a manipulative piece of human garbage.

The Trouble Is, You Think You Have Time - Buddha

I wanted to tell a story about a best friend and soul mate of mine....

Mine and Caleb's paths crossed many times in our lives.
We both went to Hume-Fogg.
He was my first date in high school and we'd ran into each other downtown a few times.

When he contacted me on Facebook in July 2011 I had no idea how a few messages would impact my life. Caleb invited me out to karaoke later that week. I nervously circled the club several times before I finally worked up the courage to park & go inside.

After catching up I told him how nervous I was and he admitted he was afraid I wouldn't show. It was also at this point he said "I am absolutely mad. I'm schizoaffective".
I went home that evening both excited & scared of what that meant.

Caleb asked me out again but I had a headache that night. He was at a friends house a mile down the road. He said " Okay. I have some music for that. I'll be right over."
An hour passed & I started to get concerned until I heard a knock at the door. There Caleb was with a bike covered in sweat.  "I accidentally biked the long way around" he said while trying to catch his breath. He put headphones on my head and said "These frequencies & tones will take your headache away". I placed my head on his shoulder and listened. That was the moment I fell in love with him.

It was easy to fall in love with Caleb. He made me laugh almost every single day. My fondest memories are the simplest. He would dance in the kitchen cooking breakfast singing into the spatula.

He made me stop & appreciate the calm, simple moments of drinking coffee on the back porch watching the squirrels while he pointed out the different kinds of birds.

Caleb made everything fun. One morning he was wearing a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle hoodie & he prompted a discussion about 'Geriatric Ninja Turtles". Caleb said one would have a walker to which I replied "Carpel Tunnel dude".

But Caleb's face really lit up when he was working on and recording music. He was so proud of his studio and would convince anyone he could to work on music with him. He was happiest in his studio with his many musically-talented friends. You guys really gave him such joy.

Caleb brought joy & positivity to so many people's lives in spite of dealing with a lot of inner turmoil. Caleb & I loved & laughed intensely. In spite of the trying times, we overcame many odds and I am thankful and grateful for those wonderful moments.

I'd like to share a part of a Ben Fold's song that Caleb played on piano & sang to me on one special occasion.

"I don't get many things right the first time,
In fact, I am told that a lot.
Now I know all the wrong stumbles
And falls brought me here.
And where was I before the day
That I first saw your lovely face?
I am the luckiest."

I consider myself the luckiest to have shared a life & love for as long as we did.

Caleb rarely had acquaintances.
He was friends with anyone he met & he would do anything for a friend.
I think that anyone who knew Caleb was the luckiest.

"You're Only Given a Little Spark of Madness. You Mustn't Lose It." - Robin Williams

I think anyone who falls in love with and chooses a significant other in our lives understands that in the beginning we are so naĂŻve to the idealistic view "in sickness and in health" whether or not we have sealed those vows in pubic or subconsciously. We believe that love really can conquer all and repair our broken spirits. When we find a partner who loves us unconditionally, shares our hobbies and same bizarre sense of humor and compliments our life like no other, we believe as a team anything is possible. My relationship was beaming with love, hope and support. My significant other had been previously diagnosed Bipolar-Schizoaffective which we planned to control with contracts and game plans in the event of a crisis however  relationships like these take almost impossible strength and mental acuity.

Since the beginning of this year my significant other has broken off into some manic realm where I am, once again, the cause of all problems and mental distress. I am the mortal enemy. I am the problem. Instead of addressing the reality and severity of the mental issues it is always the easier route to blame another person when in a whirlwind mania. It's easy to hide the symptoms of slowly losing your mind to the doctor, the post man, your friends and even parents however a perceptive spouse will generally see slight subtle changes. Mania is not always a quick blow from left field. In my experience it begins with a slight gnawing away at the spouse's core being with unimportant quips and pricks in order to jockey for a position of control over the spouse instead of being able to rationalize it is complications with mental illness.

For the last month I have experienced minor comments ranging from "You are so annoying the way you slurp your coffee" to an uncontrollable rage against the house. Cautiously,  I did not take the first clues flippantly. I contacted family members, the therapist, avoided and removed myself from possibly volatile situations. My emotions began to silently take the back-burner while I thought I was prepared to follow our thought-out game plan. S.O. got angrier and joined dating sites.  Exhausted from spinning my wheels and burying my emotions for weeks I poured my heart out at the first moment of clarity to my significant other. It was the first question of concern I'd heard in weeks and I let it purge. Although the words may sound harsh I assure you it was said softly with tears and monotone as my emotional bank was depleted.

S.O. : "Are you okay? You seem very sad?"

Cherie: "I am completely exhausted. I am giving 120% and it is still not good enough or acceptable to you. I feel myself checking out of this relationship mentally. I have accepted that nothing I do is good enough for you. You need to make a decision right now to get the help you need because I cannot try any harder for you. I need recovery. I need a clean slate. I need you to take responsibility for your well-being. You may need to get your medications checked out and leveled".

S.O.: (silently nodding his head)

And then I asked a question that I had wanted to ask for a long time....

Cherie:  "People who want to be healthy make an effort to be healthy. Did you give up all hope when you were diagnosed? Did you decide you were content to be a couch-locked, pot-head for the rest of your life? When we first met you had goals and aspirations...where did that guy go? I feel like you have given up. You blame me because you don't do the things you want to but you are your own distraction.  You don't have alone time because you want to be constantly around people who takes drugs.  How did you feel when you were diagnosed?

S.O.: "I was relieved. I felt like there was hope. I'm sorry I have made you feel this way. "

Cherie: "I need you to get help because I do not have anymore energy. I need you to research new medications and find healthy hobbies that make you happy. I need a clean slate."

S.O.: "I agree. Okay. I will ask the therapist tomorrow about rehab."

I cannot tell you the stress relief I felt immediately. I was so thankful for this random moment of clarity. I felt like I had finally struck some logic epicenter of this manic storm. I slept better than I had that night than I had for a month. "This is a very positive step. Thank you for letting me finally express my thoughts. It has been so hard", I told my significant other.

I thought clouds were lifting and daylight was creeping in.
If only it had actually stuck. The next day I was unprepared for the turbulent aftershocks.

On the morning of January 28th I awoke feeling rejuvenated & relieved. I was excited to go to the therapist's office and see positive changes begin. Once we sat in the therapist's chairs,  S.O.'s mood changed drastically. S.O. informed the therapist I was forcing him to seek treatment. I spent the next 45 minutes being picked apart again.

Utterly shocked, my brief glimpse of hope was lost. I had to accept the loving, compassionate, hilarious part of this individual I loved was no longer there. I tried to remember what our relationship was like before this mania however I couldn't remember anything good. My S.O. had become involved with drugs. He was a depressed, negative, insulting, argumentative monster. After therapy he told me I "needed to change or he wanted to break up". I told him it was over and I was not waiting another moment for him. He began to growl like a monster while he picked up the table I was sitting at and threw it across the patio. He took the bench he was sitting at and swung it close to my face and bashed it repeatedly on the patio. The he removed the metal awning post and proceeded to bash out every storm window of the house, 10 window panes, the electric box and the gate. While I was on the phone with the police he went inside and tried to tear down the metal medicine cabinet, punched his hand through the kitchen window and broke keys off in my locks. I never believed I would ever witness this extreme mental meltdown.

Space is an incredibly effective and necessary tool for relationships if the person needs time to heal and focus on oneself and step back from the relationship. It is ineffective and unacceptable to keep someone blindly waiting in the wings to catch you after your attempts to chase other women fails, blow all your money on drugs and self-destruct.  No one should enable this behavior. S.O. went to jail for 7 days and the police filed a temporary order of protection.

I have grieved. I have made my peace with closure. I have mourned the destructive forces of this illness. I have shed tears for innocence lost. I journal my angriest thoughts. I have dealt with my own feelings of failure. I have encapsulated the great parts of the relationship in my brain. I am forgiving the negative and trying to forget.  I am prepared to move forward with my head high. I have reached a certain point of acceptance.

The one thing that ruminates inside me is the helplessness involved with these episodes. People standing on the outside cannot see the benefits, the compatibility, the teamwork, the support, the hugs, the shared laughter the love that was and possibly will always be there. Mini episodic events seem so insignificant they are compartmentalized, minimized and often rationalized. Major events seems so grandiose and out-of-character that they are often dismissed as slanderous or lies. Blame is placed which distracts from defining and obtaining a solution to the real problem.

  • I have been called "a real piece of work" and "the lowest type of sub-human ever met".
  • I have been accused of ruining S.O.'s life.
  • I have been told I "ruined things" by trying to communicate.
  • I have been told that "placing boundaries is controlling". Then I was told I enabled S.O. by not placing firm boundaries.
  • I was informed that I need to "stop controlling a mentally ill man's life because I am not strong enough to handle a real man".
  • I was accused of abusing S.O.
It's a very lonely place to be. At times,  these ideas and comments make you question your own & other's sanity.

Even if you can convince anyone the reality of the situation there is little that can be done until everything has been completely destroyed. Logic cannot be applied to actions so illogical. It is impossible to convince an unstable person they are unstable. Doctor's will only commit a person if they are a threat to themselves or others & by that point it's so very, very late. It is unbelievable and unfathomable to see a complete personality change unfold within your significant other. It is terrible and painful to watch the sometimes slow descent into madness. There is little that can be accomplished in the throes of mania. The best defense is a good offense. Taking control of one's mental health is not impossible. It can be controlled substantially with a combination of therapy, the right medications, making healthy life decisions and forming a strong support system. It is hard work. Maintaining a relationship is even harder but can be equally attainable as long as staying healthy is the main goal. It's not a relationship for the faint of heart. One must really weigh the good and the bad, the yin and the yang and the love versus the pain to continue the constant struggle with their partner.

I cannot accept this behavior in my life. The love was there. Generally when episodes include rage like this, drugs or drug withdrawal is involved. I don't want to paint the picture that every mentally-ill individual will act out like this. I don't want to paint the picture that this event was the entirety of our relationship. We all make our choices and we must take responsibility for our choices. I hope this year of drug probation and anger management helps S.O. get control of his life for his sake. It is tragic the impact one poor decision can do but facing the inevitable possibility of relapse is not a decision I can afford to make. I feel a very dark place filling-in part of my heart where love and compassion once grew. As hard as this mental illness tried it did not eviscerate my ability to find joy daily. It did not take my laughter. It did not take my life.

One of the officer's at the scene told me "destruction like this is often the anger expressed towards an individual. Be glad you are alive because this is one of the worst I've seen".

Glad to be alive.
Until next time,

The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste

My apologies readers.
Wow, it has been a long time since I blogged but I need to address some things in my life and gain a sense of understanding and closure.

The past almost 3 months of my life have been a rocky one indeed. But after a lot of soul searching, reading and therapy I think I understand what caused this weird, hellish spiral in my life.

X was diagnosed Schizoaffective years prior to our meeting and reconnecting. I would've ran for the hills after knowing this ( and believe me it had crossed my mind) however X has such a kind heart, sensitive soul, goofy sense of humor, emotional awareness and intellect, creative spirit that I just couldn't imagine my life. We clicked and at that point I decided that I would be able to love him fully in spite of the mental illness.

We had 2 awesome years together and so many great times. He wanted to try to go to school for his music and in December 2012 he was not only accepted to SAE but also received a scholarship he applied for.
We were both excited. I knew this would add stress but I was comfortable enough to accept that this would involve a little distance and strain on our relationship after all we had always worked through everything as a team and this was possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

At the end of July X was having difficulty focusing at school. He was taking too many Clonazepam just to try to cope with stress and his prime directive was to get through school. A family member, after living with us for a few months pointed out that X fit all the symptoms of ADHD. That would've explained all of his concerns and symptoms so we went to the doctor to discuss options. The nurse decided to prescribe Effexor since this is apparently an anti-depressant helpful with ADHD. The nurse did not advise weaning off his current medication Zoloft which the physician later had questioned why a "hard switch" was advised.

In the following month things started getting stressful. X became more and more distant and wouldn't share hardly anything going on with his schooling or his social interactions. The doctor also added Strattera to his regimen. I guess he was coping with things okay as he became fairly withdrawn.

I want to point out that for the 2 years prior neither of us had lost our tempers or anything even remotely abusive because I don't want people to assume I have some codependent nature to be someone's caregiver nor have I ever tolerated any type of abuse. Our relationship had been based on mutual respect and support.

That somewhat changed on August 23rd. I came home from work blind-sided by a man who was mad-as-a-hatter yelling about how terrible I was and how he liked nothing about me. I couldn't even get a sentence in edgewise. I also can't tell you what was said exactly as I blocked my reception due to the hostile nature of this incident. I got in my car and left to drive around to see if perhaps this moment would pass. I received some text messages during the drive that said something to the extent of "I'm sorry. I love you. I'm going to stay at a friend's tonight so you can get some sleep for work."

So I rested, went to work,  and received a few text messages of apologies throughout the day. Whew! I was glad that was over....or so I thought. As soon as I walked through the door that evening the same rude, nasty verbal abuse began again. This time is was about how I never supported anything he did and I was negative and fat and terrible. Ok maybe the fat thing is true but I was as fat as the day he met me so I don't think that is what triggered the moment. I asked if I could video record him so that maybe he could reflect on this in the future and he said sure and then calmed down while the camera was rolling. Weird huh? Yeah.

I left and went to his mother's where I couldn't sleep at all but I was uncertain what was going on in his head and though he could use space. I messaged him that I loved him and explained about the space and he began texting the same previous slander. I knew that I couldn't live like this. I texted him "What is going on?" to which he replied "I don't know." I explained that I would come home tomorrow after work and discuss things after he cooled off because I thought the Effexor might be causing side effects.

He moved out to his aunt's while I was at work and limited contact at that point. Sometimes he would have an outburst but most of the time things were ok.

A month later in September he stopped taking the Effexor FINALLY. He said he was unreasonably angry at a friend and realized the effects it was having on him. In what I believe was a moment of clarity he called on the phone asking me "to help sue his doctor's office for destroying his life, almost ruining our relationship and to still be on his team". Thank god! He's finally come to his senses....or so I thought.

He made several bad choices in the last month:
1. He stopped taking his Abilify for 5 days because he thought he was doing okay without it.
2. He immediately stopped taking Effexor which is strongly advised against.
3. He wouldn't take the mood stabilizer prescribed by the physician.
4. He withdrew from most of his friends, family and his strongest supporter; me.
5. He dropped out of school.
6. He stopped therapy.

The next few weeks would be the most emotionally exhausting of my life.
On day he would love me, the next he would hate me. He'd profess his love to me and then tell anyone else he was in contact with that we'd broken up.

Finally on November 4th he agreed that we could attend couples therapy in a few weeks and that I could court him again however any small, distant attempt I did seemed to cause more irritation. I ended up breaking things off a week later because I could not devote any more energy to someone who had no desire to help himself let alone support a relationship.

I never thought a medication would change a person so drastically but after reading a lot I realized that anti-depressants/switching anti-depressants can cause this quick change however I've received little support in addressing this issue with X. X never explained any reasons. When his friends asked, who are as baffled as I am, "Why?" he doesn't really have any answers and quickly dismisses talking about it. "I don't think he will ever regret this." said one family member without any explanation. "He doesn't love you. I noticed it months ago", explained another member without explanation. Here are some links of similar stories of people destroying their relationships after taking SSRI anti-depressants and this is what I believe happened.
Here are some links of similar situations:

The whole thing is tragic really.
Most people with a mental illness dream of the connection, support and intimacy we shared. However it could take 5 more months for the imbalance to be corrected and in that time I cannot wait for someone who is distant, angry and moving on down a seemingly destructive path.

The B*tch Book

Let me preface that this specific blog entry will only truly be understood by a few individuals from the Hume-Fogg class of 1998. I can state for the record I was not on drugs but if you read this in it's entirety you will understand that there was no need for this. :) I don't even understand most of this nostalgic gem.

to get to detroit so she could join the band with evil force, George, cheesefairy, Spiney Melvin and Toaster man. She had kidnapped the policeman and shoved him in her bags. Don't worry he enjoyed the abuse. She got to Detroit and she found Spiney Melvin's house. She knocked on the door and she saw....

Spiney & George naked! And TOGETHER! But she didn't care too much until the policeman popped his head out of the bag and said "Ooooh! She's cute!"

After recovering from this incident she asked the evil force if she could be in the band. "Sure", said the evil force, "Can you play the spoons?" Evil force remembered how much fun that she and Superfreak had that 4 days so she called him up and asked him to be a rodie.

The band, one strange morning, were all gathered together in Spiney Melvin's bathroom and they were trying to decide on a band name. Then the weirdest thing happened...

Madame and Felix showed up with Josephine, Raisin Boy, Samantha and PHD. We all decided that it would be a good idea to have a 40 piece band just like the Freak Orchestra. We named it "Public Display of Affliction". They played their first big gig
